South Boston, VA - Dale Earnhardt Jr. became the first driver in 10 years to win the Busch race at South Boston from the pole. And he did it by picking his moments carefully before challenging race leaders in the 14-caution race.

Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Green battled through the closing laps in one of the few leader challenges that did not result in a crash.

"He had plenty of chances to spin me out and take me out of the race, but he raced me clean and I appreciate that," Earnhardt Jr. said.

Green finished second, followed by Hank Parker Jr. with a career-best third. Parker qualified fifth earlier in the day but was uncertain if he could hold on for the win. It's only the second time this season he has finished on the lead lap.

"I really didn't know," Parker said of his potential. "I didn't know if I could do it or not. I'm just tickled to death."

"There were a lot of close calls out there," Earnhardt said. "We're just real happy. We've got the points lead, and we're working on some points here."

In the final laps, Green and Earnhardt showed how to make race contact without causing a crash. Green continually could gain ground on Earnhardt, but the leader constantly cut off the advances, holding off what both deemed Green's faster car.

"In the end, his car was a lot faster than mine and I was holding him up," Earnhardt said. "I gave him a little bit of room here and there trying to get him to pinch his car up and maybe wear his tires out. But he was coming in the end."

It took Earnhardt 1 hour, 52 minutes and 43 seconds to complete the race at an average speed of 63.877 mph. There were 14 cautions for a whopping 59 laps, and five lead changes among five drivers. He stretched his lead over Kenseth in the standings to 64 points. Dale Jr has finished either 1st or 2nd in four straight NASCAR Busch Grand National Series races.
