Budweiser Racing Update: Boxing PPV and a Sports Illustrated Tribute

DE LA HOYA, HOPKINS WILL RIDE WITH DALE EARNHARDT JR.'S BUDWEISER
CAR SUNDAY, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED PAYS TRIBUTE TO EARNHARDTS

Concord, N.C. -- Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins have never been on a ride like this. The June 5 ‘Collision Course’ HBO PPV paint scheme will be on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s red #8 Budweiser Chevrolet in the NASCAR NEXTEL Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

On Earnhardt’s decklid, the details of Top Rank’s Pay Per View show will be spelled out: “Collision Course,” featuring Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Sturm and Bernard Hopkins vs. Robert Allen at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“Budweiser always comes up with cool ways to link our NASCAR team with other sports,” said Dale Jr. “I love boxing and had a boxing ring in my garage where I sparred with my buddies. Even though my schedule keeps me running, I will definitely be watching HBO Pay Per View from my motorcoach next Saturday night."

“We’re excited because this is an unprecedented marriage between two sports franchises which are gaining awareness to all spectators,” said Bob Arum, president of Top Rank. “The King of Beers recognized the power of the two sports and was very instrumental putting this together.”

“We are excited about this ground-breaking cross-promotion between two mega events in motor sports and boxing,” said HBO Sports Senior Vice-President Mark Taffet, “and we are always proud to have the Budweiser seal of approval on our HBO Pay-Per-View fights.”

On June 5, De La Hoya will attempt to capture a world title in his sixth weight division when he takes on undefeated WBO middleweight champion Felix Sturm of Germany. Hopkins will make his 18th world middleweight defense against #1 rated challenger Robert Allen of Stone Mountain, Ga.

Earnhardt Jr., the driver of the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, enters this weekend's race with a 40-point lead in the season point standings.

With his victory at Richmond, Va., on May 16, Dale Jr. became the first driver in the circuit to reach three wins this year. His three wins tie his career best for victories in a single season, matching his 2001 victory total. After 11 races in 2004, he is the series leader in top-five finishes (7, tied with Jimmie Johnson), laps led (552), top-10 starts (9) and prize earnings ($3,339,005).

Budweiser is brewed by Anheuser-Busch Inc., the leading U.S. brewer that holds a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico's leading brewer. In a survey of 10,000 business leaders and securities analysts, Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. ranked first overall in quality of products and services among nearly 600 companies researched in FORTUNE magazine's 2004 "America's Most Admired Companies" listing. The company also is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and is the world's largest recycler of aluminum beverage containers.
