Dale Jr. helps celebrate the 90th birthday of Oreo
June 12th, 2002

Today NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a pit stop in New York City to help celebrate the 90th birthday of Oreo, America's Favorite Cookie.

Earnhardt Jr. took a spin in a special 90th birthday Oreo racecar to christen a newly renamed city street "Oreo Way." "Oreo Way" is located in New York City's famed Chelsea neighborhood on West 15th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues, right next to Chelsea Market, a food market that is the site of the original Nabisco(R) bakery and the birthplace of the Oreo cookie.

Local school children from P.S. 41 on West 11th Street joined Earnhardt Jr. in singing "Happy Birthday" to Oreo and helped blow out 90 candles that adorned a giant birthday cake.

Also as part of the birthday celebration, a historical exhibit was unveiled at Chelsea Market that showcases 90 years of Oreo. The exhibit, "Oreo on View," contains artifacts and memorabilia including the first Oreo bill of sale and vintage advertisements and is on view free through October in the public concourse of Chelsea Market.

"We're so excited to be here at Chelsea Market today, the birthplace of the Oreo, to commemorate 90 years of America's favorite cookie," said Archie Mack, Senior Category Business Director for Oreo. "Oreo has such a rich heritage, so naturally we have a great reason to celebrate."

Oreo also handed out 100,000 cookies throughout New York City today to mark this milestone in the history of the iconic cookie.

Oreo was originally introduced as the Oreo Biscuit, two embossed chocolate-flavored wafers with a rich cream filling. In 1921, the name Oreo Biscuit was changed to Oreo Sandwich. Then, the name changed to Oreo Creme Sandwich in 1948. Finally, in 1974, Oreo Creme Sandwich was changed to its current name, Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie.

Oreo is the flagship brand for Kraft Foods' Nabisco Biscuit Division, home to some of the most popular cookies and crackers in the world. In more than 145 countries, Kraft Foods markets the world's favorite food and beverage brands including Kraft cheese, Jacobs and Maxwell House coffees, Nabisco cookies and crackers, Philadelphia cream cheese, Oscar Mayer meats, Post Cereals and Milka chocolates.
