There has been an unfortunate situation this week regarding the interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. that was trumpeted as an "exclusive" by the 700 Club television program.
During the Atlanta race weekend, an agreement was made for Dale Jr. to speak with a video crew to answer two questions about his good friend, Dale Beaver of Motor Racing Outreach (MRO). Since the story was focused upon Beaver, the 700 Club had promised to comply with our request that there be no questions about Dale Jr's father. Almost immediately, the interviewer began asking about "the tragedy." Dale Jr., being gracious, did answer their many questions despite his discomfort so soon after his father's death.
Following the interview, the producer brought out a large backpack of merchandise for Dale Jr. to autograph. The experience left us with a bad taste, made worse by the shameless publicity surrounding the interview. Sadly, the story that aired included very little about Beaver, of whom Dale Jr. has the utmost respect and friendship.
