No Weekend Off for Dale Jr. - April 17th, 2000
Earnhardt Jr. Delivers Budweiser in Hawaii
|
It has been non-stop action for NASCAR Winston Cup driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. since the season began in mid-February. Like most NASCAR drivers, a typical week for Dale Jr. involves traveling, testing, practicing, conducting media interviews, autograph sessions and sponsor appearances, and even driving in a race. So, with this week representing a rare quiet one on the Winston Cup schedule, you'd think the 25-year-old winner of the DirecTV 500 at Texas Motor Speedway would want to kick back and enjoy lounging on his couch.
No, not this week.
A weekend off means Earnhardt Jr. is delivering Budweiser beer. Lots of beer. To thirsty military staff. In Hawaii.
The island visit is the first of a handful of unique and fun Budweiser appearances for Earnhardt Jr. throughout the year. Among his stops at military installations in Hawaii will be a special visit to the USS Missouri. The 887-foot battleship, known as "the Mighty Mo," is larger and more powerful than Earnhardt's 725-horsepower Budweiser Monte Carlo and has protected American forces in three wars over a five-decade span. Now berthed at Pearl Harbor's Battleship Row, the massive ship is best known as the site of the signing of the documents that ended World War II in September, 1945.
Earnhardt Jr. will have a media and fan reception on board the USS Missouri at 2:30 pm Thursday, April 20.
After spending Thursday delivering the King of Beers, Earnhardt Jr. will have several days to lounge on the beach before flying to a test session at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California next Tuesday and Wednesday.
-------------------Who Wants to be a Millionaire?--------------------
During his brief career in the NASCAR Busch Series, Dale Jr. won two championships and 13 races, with career Busch earnings of $3.06 million.
Now, only 14 races into his Winston Cup career, Earnhardt Jr. is fast approaching the one million dollar mark in Winston Cup prize money. After five races in 1999 and nine this season, he has amassed $922,081 in winnings, which puts him in range of surpassing the one million dollar mark next week at the NAPA 500 at California Speedway in Fontana.
