25-Year-Old Rookie First Repeat Winner of 2000 Season
|
Notes, facts and stats after Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s second career Winston Cup victory Saturday night in the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.
-- Earnhardt Jr. earned his second victory in his 16th career start, which ties him with another famous son - Davey Allison - as the quickest multi-winner in Winston Cup history. It is twice as quick as any other active driver. (Tony Stewart grabbed his second win in his 32nd start last season.)
-- Stewart holds the record with three victories in his rookie season, while Allison and Earnhardt Jr. are the only others with two wins in their rookie seasons. Dale Jr. has 23 races remaining to match or surpass Stewart's record.
-- The winner's purse of $118,850 vaults Dale Jr. past the one million dollar mark in career Cup earnings. He has won $931,211 in eleven races in 2000, adding to his five-race 1999 total of $162,000.
-- Earnhardt Jr. is the first driver to win twice in 2000, breaking a string of ten winners in ten races.
-- Earnhardt Jr. scored his first career Winston Cup victory at Texas Motor Speedway in only his 12th Cup race - the second quickest inaugural win in Cup history, and fastest among all active drivers.
-- Dale Jr. has eight top ten starts in 11 races this season - more than any other driver. His average starting position (9) is best among all Winston Cup drivers.
-- Dale Jr. joins Davey Allison as the only rookies to qualify outright for the Winston all-star race. Allison made the field in 1987. Stewart made the Winston line-up last year after winning the Winston Open qualifying race.
