Race 15 of 36
RECAPPING THE RACE:
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won Sunday's race at Michigan International Speedway in dominating fashion with a 5.393 second lead over second-place Tony Stewart. A celebratory roar from the fans could be heard over the No. 88 Diet Mountain Dew/The Dark Knight Rises/National Guard Chevrolet's victory burnouts.
After capturing his 19th career victory, Earnhardt remains second in the driver standings but closes the gap to four points behind leader Matt Kenseth after the 15th race of the 2012 season.
Earnhardt rolled off the grid 17th after a rain shower delayed the start time by almost two hours.
Earnhardt's Chevrolet, themed in anticipation of the newest “Batman” movie, quickly proved to be the dominating car of the race. He moved into the top spot on Lap 70 and would lead the field four more times for a race-high 95 laps of the 200-lap race.
After a late-race round of green-flag pit stops cycled through on Lap 170, Earnhardt was scored atop the leaderboard. He continued to pull away from the field during the final 30 laps to score his second career points race for Hendrick Motorsports.
QUOTING DALE EARNHARDT JR.:
EARNHARDT (ON SUNDAY'S WIN AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY.): "I've got to give Steve Letarte (crew chief) and my team all the credit. They've been building some great cars this year. We've been really strong every week, and we have just been getting better and better. This year, we've been faster and faster. Hopefully we can win some more races. I just real proud of Diet Mountain Dew, the National Guard, Sprint, Chevrolet and all of our partners. I have to thank all the fans for sticking behind us through all these years trying to get back to Victory Lane. I'd say this win right here is more for them than anybody because they've supported us through everything. So, we really appreciate that."
