DALE EARNHARDT JR. NO. 88 NATIONAL GUARD/AMP ENERGY CHEVROLET POST-RACE RECAP/DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY DATE: Sept. 26, 2010 START: 32nd FINISH: 23rd POINTS POSITION: 18th RECAPPING THE RACE: An untimely caution flag trapped Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 National Guard/ AMP Energy Chevrolet a lap down from the leaders at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on Sunday. The team spent the second half of the 400-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series fine-tuning the handling and eventually crossed the finish line 23rd. Earnhardt lined up 32nd for Sunday's 400-mile event and maintained his starting position during the opening laps. On Lap 19 he notified crew chief Lance McGrew that the blue-and-white Chevy needed to turn better. The caution flag waved on Lap 37, and McGrew used the opportunity to make adjustments to the No. 88 Chevy. The over-wall-crew maintained the position on pit road. The field went back to green-flag racing on Lap 43, and the adjustments seemed to do the trick. Earnhardt raced as high at 21st during the run but noted he still wanted his Chevy to turn better. A round of green-flag pit stops started on Lap 183, and Earnhardt headed down pit road three laps later. The No. 88 team quickly bolted on four fresh Goodyear tires, gave the Chevy fuel and made a chassis adjustment. Unfortunately, the leaders had yet to make their way down pit road when the caution flag waved, trapping Earnhardt and several other competitors a lap down. With long green-flag runs in the second half of the race, Earnhardt never was able to get back on the lead lap. He crossed the finish line 23rd behind his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and race winner Jimmie Johnson. ***** Courtesy of Hendrick Motorsports.
